FDA Strengthens Safeguards for Consumers of Beef

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a final regulation barring certain cattle materials from all animal feed, including pet food. The final rule further protects animals and consumers against bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE, also known as "mad cow disease"). This regulation finalizes a proposed rule that the FDA issued for public comment in October 2005.
Smith-Lever Special Needs Funding

Requests for application are now available for CSREES' Special Needs Program. Those eligible to apply are 1862 Land Grant Institutions. This round of funding is intended "to support innovative, education-based approaches to addressing emergency preparedness and specific responses related to natural and man-made disasters.
EDEN Participates in Groundbreaking Web site Providing a New Resource for Consumers in Disaster Education

Many land-grant institutions have partnered in a groundbreaking new Web site, eXtension.org, launched during the National Ag Outlook Forum February 21 and 22.  EDEN led one of the Pioneer Communities of Practice with work teams that have focused on Agrosecurity and Flooding.  EDEN resources in these topic areas are now available to the general public through eXtension.
DHS Announces Chemical Screening Extension for Specific Facilities

DHS issued a letter December 21 announcing a time extension will be applied for certain facilities until further notice, or unless otherwise specifically notified in writing by DHS.
The British Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs Confirms Second Case of HPAI H5N1

On November 19, laboratory test results confirmed H5N1 Avian Influenza in turkeys at one of the Dangerous Contact premises. These premises had been placed under restriction, on November 14. Culling was completed on November 17. On clinical inspection the flock appeared healthy which indicates the infection was in its early stages.

Highly pathogenic H7N3 avian influenza has been detected in a commercial poultry operation in Saskatchewan , the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced September 27.

Foot and Mouth Disease Resurfaces in UK

On September 12, British authorities confirmed a new outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease on a farm in the county of Surrey. The farm is not far from the site of an August outbreak of the disease.
FMD Update: European Union allows Britain to resume animal exports

Britain appears to have successfully contained the Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak which started on Aug. 2nd, 2007. On Aug. 23rd the EU allowed Britain to resume exports of animals and animal products.

Animal health officials in the UK have identified the strain of FMD virus in the recent outbreak in Surrey.  The virus is very similar to one isolated from an outbreak of FMD in Britain 40 years ago.  It is not one known to be currently present in animals, but has been used for vaccine research at laboratories associated with the Institute for Animal Health at Pirbright, which is close to the affected farms. Infected animals have been found on two premises belonging to the same business.

On May 13 a U.S. patient with XDR TB arrived in Paris and had departed on Air France flight 385 from Atlanta.  The patient returned to the United States on Czech Air flight 0104 and then entered the United States by car.
